Help: Birding in Fraser’s Hill /Kuala Selangor (1 Viewer)

I’ll be visiting Fraser’s Hill on the 31 Jan for 3 days and afterwards planning to travel to Kuala Selangor for one night. Need help on the following questions,

Please let me know the best bird trails that I should do at Fraser’s Hill during this short stay. Any good locations for bird photography.

What’s the weather like at Fraser’s Hill during this time of the year (Feb)

How could I get to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Kuba Baru using public transport?

How could I get back to Kuala Lampur from Kuala Selangor using public transport.

Many thanks
Sandaruwan

Sandaruwan,
Fraser's hill is really well birded and there is lots of information on this forum and many trip reports on cloud birders etc.... Also I have provided you a link to an ebird map of Frasers hill which might be helpful

The Main Trails are Hemmant, Bishops, Jelai Resort, High Pines, Telekom loop, road to the the gap.

Even though Fraser's hill is small, the habitat is varied and certain species seem to prefer specific locations.

BTW you will want to pick up a trail map at the reserve center at the entrance to Frazer's Hill (Between the Puncak Inn and Shahzan inn)

BTW some species are probably going to be really hard if you aren't using calls.

Also you can Google public transport routes in Malaysia - I found an easy route to get from Taman Negara to Fraser's Hill using public transport (except the last bit)

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your reply and information. That’s a quite a interesting link. Managed to find most of the information from forums. Just wanted to know the current bird situation if someone was birding around that area.

Managed to figure out the transport routes as well other than the Fraser Hill to Kuala Selangor leg which i need to sort out.
Thanks again
Sandaruwan

The roads up and down from the hill are good - especially the down-road. Plenty of places to stop & bird.
If you have no transport I'm sure people would give lifts along the roads. Well worth it.

The weather is good - cooler than the lowlands and dry in feb.

Good luck.

Thanks halftwo for that information.

Hi Steve, I have not received a PM. I’ll be arriving on the same day with another friend of mine. Taking an overnight bus from Singapore and then the KTM from KL. Hoping to get to FH by noon.

As well as the old road to the Gap, I'd recommend birding the new road (that was blocked by a massive landslide after a few km a few years ago). This was also good for birds, including the Whistling Thrush at a stream at the edge of town.

Sorry I messed the message up.

Will probably be turning up early afternoon, should cross paths at some stage, esp if you're also staying at the Shahzan. Be good to compare sightings whilst there.

Yes, I heard it there, Larry, but didn't catch a glimpse.

The Whistling Thrush is hard. No other birder that I chatted with saw it whilst I was there, even though I gave the location where I saw it (very near to where Hor Kee told me to look - see link) to a group of solid birders who spent a few hours looking for it. But I did miss Mountain Peacock-Pheasant which is apparently possible but difficult along High Pines Trail I think.

I'll be staying at Shahzan Inn too. Yes, it would be nice to meet up. This is the first time i'm birding in Malaysia so i would need some help on ID as well. Would there be a place in FH to buy a guide book. Would prefer something covering Malaysia and Singapore.

Larry Sweetland / cassowary : Thank you for the information.
