A Welsh birder in Dorset!
Went out today with another BF member (corvus corax) to try and boost his dwindling year list. So to start off we decided to go to WWT Llanelli. i and hadnt been there before and with the chance of garganey and Spoonbill, i was rather looking forward to it. however, we were both dissapointed. there was very little around besides 1 black tailed godwit, 4 little egret, 2 redshank and a few gulls. We concluded that this venue wasnt going to be very productive for the year lists. so we decided to head back towards home and stop off at Llangors Lake.
As we were heading towards Llangors, i realised that the route we were taking lead us past an excellent site for ring ouzel. We both needed one for the list so we stopped there and wandered into the hills. we also wanted to get redstart and tree pipit. thankfully after a short scanning session we found 4 ring ouzel, 2 redstart and a tree pipit! my mate also needed red kite, this was nice and easy as i looked out of the car window whilst he was on teh phone and there was one flying over the car.
Next it was onto Llangors with a few target species, mainly spotted flycatcher. After scanning the reservoir we found a little ringed plover, a fwe lapwing and black headed gulls, but it was to late in the day for loads of singing warblers. We then set off to the church yard for the spotted flycatcher. literally within 5 mins of us being there i found on and got it through the scope. then another appeared and posed beautifully on a cherry tree!
Then finally on the way back we stopped at a local site, Garnlydan res. This was because we needed common sandpiper. thankfully, that was easy and got one straight away. we also saw a few stonechat, and a stunning male reed bunting feeding out on the grass!
Species seen: grt crested grebe, cormorant, little egret, grey heron, mute swan, whopper swan (resident wild birds at wwt), greylag geese, canada geese, shellduck, mallard, gadwall, tufted duck, common buzzard, red kite, kestrel, peregrine, pheasant, moorhen, coot, oystercatcher, little ringed plover, lapwing, curlew, black tailed godwit, redshank, common sandpiper, black headed gull, herring gull, great black backed gull, lesser black backed gull, collard dove, cuckoo, woodpigeon, grt spotted woodpecker, skylark, swift, sand martin, house martin, swallow, meadow pipit, tree pipit, pied wagtail, wren, dunnock, robin, redstart, stonechat, wheatear, ring ouzel, black bird, song thrush, mistle thrush, reed warbler, sedge warbler, whitethroat, blackcap, chiffchaff, willow warbler, goldcrest, spotted flycatcher, blue tit, great tit, nuthatch, magpie, jackdaw, rook, crow, raven, starling, house sparrow, chaffinch, goldfinch, green finch, linnet, reed bunting,
