a friend needs a bird id they think female Von Schrenck's Bittern tho none of the photosd I have seen look at all like this bird!

Looks closer to a heron, particularly the Malaysian Night Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus). Could be a juvenile hence the colour variation. I could be wrong so let's wait for alternative views as well. Can you disclose where this shot was taken?

I haven's seen any of the species suggested but to me this looks like a Butorides sp.

That was my thinking, too.
