So glad I found this forum!
For the past few years since living in my current house, I’ve had house finches make nests in the wreath on my front door. I mostly use the backdoor so it’s a great place for them with a little cover. Yesterday, the nest was fine with 5 fledglings only a few days old. Today, i went to take a peek and the nest was laying in my sidewalk and I found 2 dead babies. I’m heartbroken! No one has used the door, we haven’t had a storm or wind. I get very attached to these birds each year and I’ve always been ridiculously sensitive (as far as other people are concerned) about animals so I really am very upset. Are the parents sad about what happened? Is it possible they were able to move a few of them or do you think a predator got to them? Will they continue to use my door for their nests or is it unsafe now and they’ll move on? Thanks for any insight you have!
ps - it technically looked like a nest within 2 other nests and the top nest was in the sidewalk with the remaining nests leaning out of the wreath. Not sure if that matters because I’m sure they made it stable when building it.
