Holiday in Algarve (1 Viewer)

From 28th September I will be visiting the Algarve on a family holiday for a fortnight. We would like to spend a couple of days birding, one on land and one on sea for three adults. We will not have our own transport. I wondered if anybody can put me in touch with firms that could do this for us.

If you want to go offshore, Mar Ilimitado in Sagres are excellent - I've just been out with them today. They don't do that many dedicated pelagic, but I think your holiday dates take you into the Sagres Birdwatching Festival when they're usually offered on a daily basis. The only problem if you don't have transport could be getting to Sagres - I think there is a bus from Lagos at the end of the train line, but the level of difficulty really depends where you are staying.

I'd recommend Gonçalo Elias's book The 100 Best Birding Hotspots in the Algarve - it organises sites by local council area (concelho) so you can see which are in your area, and there's a section at the back setting out which sites are accessible by train, bus or ferry boat. Although I do have a car now, I've done (and still do) quite a bit of birding by train or on foot - the barrier islands and salt pans of the Ria Formosa for example are well served by the coastal train line. I think its available from Amazon, although I recall I got mine from NHBS.
