Holmfirth Birding (1 Viewer)

Hello, Yorkshire folk.

I'll (touch wood) soon be moving to God's Own Country as it is known, specifically Holmfirth.

Are there birders in the vicinity? Local societies? Local info.?

I hope I'll have time to start a Blog/ongoing thread, either here or on 'My Birding Day' sometime soon.

I've already got Dotterel on my new patch, so things are looking good.

Cheers all,

H

Moving to Holmfirth is a bit drastic if you're trying to get a good seat for TDF2014

You're not too far from Barnsley there either http://barnsleybirds.blogspot.co.uk/. In Focus have a shop at Denby Dale which is just down the road, welcome and enjoy.

Any particular interests?

Thanks for the Barnsley link: I'm currently there at my girlfriends.

In Cheshire my patch holds a pair of Hobbies which I write about & watch as often as possible: see the Hobby Thread. I'm going to miss that, so aim to try to find a local pair.

Well, it looks like I'm moving in tomorrow (these things are never a certainty, as yesterday's fiascos attested) - so watch this space!

Thanks CC & Rob.

Had a Hobby reaction from the Swallows yesterday, but didn't see the raptor.

Today, my first full day in the new house, I had a Red kite come up the valley then turn back to Holmfirth !!

red kite is a very good sighting for the area. i know the area round winscar/ dunford bridge is worth a mooch too. i was up round diggley resser on sunday and there was a good display of butterflies around, if they do anything for you

Had an hour to spend on my new local patch so went out.
Young Red grouse in the bilberry, a single Buzzard and Kestrel and many young Swallows and House Martins.
The hoped for Hobby didn't materialise however.

This morning I took a short walk from my house down on the local valley. A delightful spot with a stream which holds trout.
A brief sight of a Dipper disappearing upstream was edifying as was the Common hawker patrolling the water.

Butterflies were everywhere. Swallows and Swifts zapped above. A Brown hawker and a Common darter added to the odonata tally.
Chatting to a local told of Kingfishers there, and a few minutes later one obliged with a streak past.
Not many species but some good uns.
