I love birds, especially ducks here year round. I observe and photograph and always have questions regarding whet I saw. (1 Viewer)

I saw this pair on a rock in the pond. Initially I thought is was a peaceful fight, but then recognized that the two were mutually preening each other, sometimes simultaneously and sometimes one on another. These were Wood Ducks and I have never seen this even in bonded pairs. I have found descriptions on alternate sex preening, but can find nothing regarding same sex preening. Is this uncommon of just a function of the male/female numbers are 6/6 in the males' favor. I have many more pictures that I took, close to 30 during this sequence. Thank you.

Hi Lucy and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. We don't get Wood Ducks over here, so I have no experience of their behaviour.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
