Day at home, having a look around the garden and noticed 4 or 5 five of these, behaving like flies rather than bees or hoverflies. Took some pics and had a study later. Are these Tachina fera?

Yes, certainly looks to be Tachina fera. The dull brownish thorax and pale orange sides to the abdomen are a key separator from the more vivid Norwickia ferox which is much glossier and bright orange/black.
