Kenko Pro 1.4x but which one for 80-200 AF-D (Nikon) (1 Viewer)

I've recently purchased an 80-200 f2.8 AF-D and I'm wanting to use a 1.4x converter. I know I need to use either the Tamron or the Kenko Pro. I've seen there are two versions of the Kenko Pro. A grey/white version with 10 contacts and the black with fewer contacts. So which do I need to get or doesn't it matter. I'd prefer the black obviously to match the lens.

Cheers

Sorry, I don't actually have either of these, but I think either would work fine with the 80-200. A quick survey of some lenses in my bag shows either 8 or 10 pins on the AFS type lenses-- (300mm f/4 has 10). Older, 'screw-drive' lenses mostly have 5-- (4 together, skip two spots, one more)

The 80-200 is not AFS, so the number of contacts on the teleconverter should not be an issue.

Here's an interesting link with more info:

BTW, the photos on the web are misleading. The B&H picture of the "1.4x teleplus pro 300 DG", for example, doesn't even look like the Nikon mount.

regards,

Jim

That's great Jim, thanks for the reply. I thought it wouldn't matter but on one site I read that "you need to get the 10 contact version to let the camera know you have an AF-S lens fitted" but mine isn't an AF-S lens so that seems to make sense. Thanks again

Well I have the Kenko N-AF Teleplus DG Pro 1.4 Teleconverter - latest model. Interestingly, this conveter has 10 contacts on the internal side, (where lens fits) and 8 on the external side, (fits into camera). Autofocus and aperture settings work fine with my AF-S lenses, except my 500 f4 AF-S which only works with my Nikon TC14E. All my AF-D lenses work fine with it. I don't know what the grey version is, unless it's a Canon fit converter you've seen. Incidentally, the Tamron, Kenko and Teleplus are all made by the same manufacturer and re-badged. There are 2 versions of each, one of which is a lower spec, go for the DG Pro version and you won't go far wrong.

I imagine that since you can buy most Nikon lenses in 'grey' Kenko do a TC to match

Yes the 'grey' version I've seen is definitely Nikon-fit. I think the standard black Pro300 should be okay. I actually bought a Kenko Pro 300 1.4 a few years ago to use with my Sigma 500mm f4.5 but it was not good with that lens contrary to what you read about that combination, I then purchased from a BF member an 'adapted' TC-14e and that is permanently attached to my Sigma 500mm with no loss in quality.
