For me, 3d starts with the Depth of Field when you focus on a subject: the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus. Contrast may add to the 3d effect as well.
In 8x42 binos the DoF should be the same. However, unknown men from Leica whisper that they have managed to defy the laws of nature by creating more 3D in the Noctivid. It's done on purpose by their engineers.
This is puzzling, to say the least.
And that's why forum member Jan van Daalen (shop owner House of Outdoor in Maarssen) gave me an 8x42 Ultravid HD Plus for a few weeks, so I can compare it with my new Noctivid 8x42 (don't blame him, it's my obsession
).
After a week of testing my Noctivid I can say that the 3d effect is impressive. That said, my former binos were the Ultravid HD 10x42, different magnification, different Field of View, my memory may fool me.
To be continued...
