Please excuse my ignorance.

I got the Olympus SP-55OUZ camera a few years ago, and included was this lens adaptor. I didn't know what it was at the time, and I've just found it again in the box.

One end screws onto the lens, but what does the other end screw on to? What's it actually for?

Oh! Er... right. Thanks KC.

I did try it on my telescope, but it wouldn't fit. Ummm... I really am showing my ignorance now, but what sort of lens would I want to put on it then?

Interesting what you come across when you start sorting cupboards out, isn't it LOL.

With that type of camera there used to be both a wide-extender lens and a tele-extender lens available. The last one would increase the focal length of the lens, possibly with some negative effects on image quality - this depends a lot on the quality of the lens you screw on. If you were living next door I would give you my old tele-extender lens for free - the quality was so bad you probably would not want it on anyway :-O

You can add a TCON-17 (http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Tcon-17-1-7x-Telephoto-Converter/dp/B00009MJK7) converter to your camera using the CLA-10 adapter. This way you'll achieve a maximum focal length of about 850 mm, which is the equivalent of a very long lens on a DSLR camera. TCON-17 is optically a good converter, so the decrease of the image quality would not be so significant. On the other hand, such a long focal length could be a problem for the image stabilization of the gear.

A few years ago I had a SP 560UZ camera and I used the CLA-10 adapter for adding another converter (Raynox DCR-1540PRO). You'll find some (old) pictures taken with this combo in my gallery.

Aaaah!!! Thanks Cristian. Got it - that T-Con is the thing that ChrisKten bought last year and has such good long distance shots with.

You've some great pictures there too. Now I need to think LOL.

I don't want to put a damper on you, but I have to say that ChrisKten has a Panasonic FZ150 which is a better camera (comparison with your SP 550UZ)...;)

Eeeh and he's a better photographer too Cristian :-O

At least I know what the thing is for now, thanks to all you lovely people. It's a shame it doesn't slip over my telescope eyepiece!
