Can any recommend good birding areas in and around Madrid city centre? I have my own car to travel around, thx.

Hi, one of the best places close to Madrid City is El Monte de El Pardo. Spanish Imperial Eagle can be seen easily at Mingorrubio (parking lclose to cemetery of the village of El Pardo) Also you can see there Monk and Griffons Vultures.

In the city centre there is the Casa de Campo park. It's a huge park "wilderness", and although I'm not sure that you'll see anything particularly rare, I've spent a couple of hours wandering around it at sunset on my last two trips to Madrid, and seen many of the Spanish woodland species (woodpeckers, treecreeper, tits, finches) and of course hundreds of parakeets...
