Menorca (1 Viewer)

I will be visiting Menorca soon (can't be too specific about the date). Has anyone visited this year? Any recent sightings. I have plenty of trip reports from previous years, just need any recent bits of info.
Cheers, Nick Smith

Hi Nick,
I visited Menorca both this and last year - on both occasions during the first 2 weeks in May. Although birding on Menorca isn't particularly good, unfortunately this year was very poor indeed. I stayed at Son Bou and visited Son Bou Marsh several times - last year I had Bittern, Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Great Reed Warbler, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper. This year the only birds of note were Marsh Harrier, Curlew Sandpiper and Black-winged Stilt, with Audouin's Gull on the beach (fairly common) and both Cory's and Balearic shearwater's in the bay. Booted Eagle is common and the occasional Peregrine and Red Kite shouldn't be too difficult - although I didn't see Egyptian Vulture this year, but they do breed on the island. Try Cap de Cavalleria in the north (by the lighthouse) for shearwaters, Blue Rock Thrush and Tawny Pipit. Another site worth trying is Cala Tirant Marsh, but keep away from Menorca's premier reserve at S'Albufera, unless of course you want to see hundreds of Coot and a few Grey Heron! Common Swift flocks are always worth checking through for both Pallid and Alpines - I had both this and last year. Thekla Lark, Nightingale, Turtle Dove, Woodchat Shrike, Cettis's Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Bee-eater (passage) and Spotted Flycatcher were all fairly common on both visits.

Hope this helps. Have a great holiday.

Menorca 2006

Hi Nick

We stayed at Cala Galdana on the south coast of Menorca from 23 to 30 June 2006. It wasn’t by any means a purely birding holiday. Also we’re by no means expert birders yet, having only become enthusiasts in the past 3-4 years, so we probably missed a lot. However, here’s what we saw.

Cala Galdana itself: very many Yellow-legged Gulls, Spotted Flycatchers, House Martins and of course Sparrows and feral Pigeons; a few Blackbirds; an Eleonora’s Falcon; a Cormorant in the bay; and once a Booted Eagle high above. We heard several Greenfinches but only saw one.

S’Algendar Gorge, which leads up from Cala Galdana: Mallards, hybrid ducks with some Mallard in the mix; Geese (probably escaped domestic fowl), Coots and a Grey Heron on the lower reaches of the river. Further up, Booted Eagles, a female Woodchat Shrike, Sardinian Warblers, Woodpigeons and – about 40 minutes’ walk up from the town – four or five lovely Egyptian Vultures, including we think a couple of young, circling overhead, mostly very high but unmistakable from the tail shape. Many other birds were singing in the woods in the lower part of the gorge but we are too inexperienced to identify them accurately.

Son Bou: in addition to many Mallards and Coots on the ponds in the reedbeds, we saw a Purple Heron, a Moustached Warbler, and several Audouin’s Gulls of different ages. This was late afternoon; an early morning visit would probably be much more productive.

S’Albufera: like BGuy, we found this, although an attractive place to visit, very short on birds at this time of year! Lots of Mallards and Coots; otherwise despite spending over 2 hours here we saw only a Black Kite on our way in and a Red Kite on our way out (and as we live in mid-Wales that wasn’t much of a treat – we see them almost every day at home and at work). However we did hear from other visitors that there was an Osprey somewhere on the reserve; and there were certainly lizards and beautiful flying insects in abundance, as well as interesting vegetation.

Naveta des Tudons, near Ciutadella on the main Mao-Ciutadella road: this is generally considered a historic monument rather than a birdwatching site, but we strongly recommend it especially in late evening. This was the only place we saw as well as heard Hoopoes; we also saw Thekla Larks, many Goldfinches, a couple of Kestrels, and heard Greenfinches, a Blackcap and we think several other warblers; the birdsong was superb. If you’re an expert in identifying small farmland birds, this site is ideal; follow the path on up from the monument site away from the road for a few minutes and you are likely to see and hear a lot. Our tip for the best birding site at this time of year, and the monument is interesting too.

Secluded bays on the south coast away from the main resorts: look out for very calm, unafraid and handsome Cormorants. On a boat trip where we had an hour’s stop for swimming, snorkelling or sunbathing, we found them right in amongst us, and have some good pictures of my husband swimming with them and treading water while watching one on a rock less than a metre from him. A boat trip is also a good way to watch raptors (especially kestrels) over the cliffs.

La Mola (easternmost point of Menorca): excellent views of a Kestrel family, probably training the young in hunting behaviour; plus more Cormorants, Yellow-Legged and Audouin’s Gulls.

Otherwise, on our travels around the island, more of the same, especially raptors and sparrows, plus a fair number of Carrion Crows – but we’re sure that experts would have spotted more. Wish we’d seen Bee-eaters!

Good afternoon.Have you seen the book "THE BIRDS OF MENORCA"by enric ramos.isbn.84-273-0761-6.This will give you a good grounding of the island. B :)

I thought that the only member of the crow family present on Menorca is the raven. After two visits to the island I have never seen any other crow species.

Sean

Nick,
Sean is right, Carrion Crow has not been recorded on Menorca according to the Enric Ramos literature, so ajaia's sightings were almost certainly Ravens. Also, Black Kite is considered to be a scarce migrant with only occasional sightings during the winter months, however, some juveniles have been recorded in July and August. Cormorant is a winter visitor as well, arriving in September and departing as late as April. Shag is common throughout the year, so perhaps ajaia's sightings were this species and not Cormorant - although I did see one Cormorant during my visit in May last year.

Ravens not Crows, Shags not Cormorants

Many thanks to both Sean and BGuy for their helpful comments - much appreciated by this relative novice. The Black Kite seems pretty definite since some very experienced birders at S'Albufera independently confirmed this one-off observation, but we're happy to be corrected that the corvids we saw were Ravens (we never saw them very close up) and our "Cormorants" were in fact Shags. In the latter case we were misled by the large size of the birds in comparison with the Shags we see in West Wales, which size-wise are considerably smaller than our local Cormorants, and by their comparative sociability and tolerance of humans. The rather chunky beaks, relatively speaking, also made us class them as Cormorants, but the literature indicates that there can be big racial and sexual variations in all these characters so I think we just got this wrong. Either way, they're lovely birds!

Yes, you're right ajaia, both are lovely birds. Great to hear that the Black Kite was confirmed on the spot . . . an excellent find for Menorca. Well done.

Many thanks. Am back now. Saw 50+ species, but mainly in N and NW. Visited S'Albufera and saw loads of Coots, LGrebes and two BWStilts. Plenty Booted Eagles, BRThrush. Just Cory's off the Cap Cavallier, no others. Best was Purple Gallinule at Son Parc in the north plus a family of Woodchats feeding on the golf course. i will do a trip report and put it on Surfbirds. Many thanks for all your help
