Mystery solved-Mobile, Alabama (1 Viewer)

I recently posted a description of some birds that were in my feeder. I had never seen them before, and there were dozens of them. It is absolutely amazing what cataract surgery can do for your eyesight. I just had the surgery and now I could see more detail on the birds. I finally found them on line in a National Geographic photo shoot. They are Scaly-breasted Munias. What are they doing in Mobile, Alabama.

Escapees of this popular cage bird (AKA “Spice Finch”, “Nutmeg Mannikin”) have established feral populations in various places in the warmer parts of the US. Looks like Mobile might be one of them. The only such populations I’ve seen in Nevada so far have been in the far south of the state.

Yes, there are a few pockets of them here on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, makes sense that there would be a few in the Mobile area as well.

According to eBird data, Scaly-breasted Munias are reported with some regularity around Pensicola, and less so in Mobile - but they are there. :)
