My forum name is Yooper2 (yes I'm proud of my birthplace -- Upper Michigan), and I now live near the eastern shore of the Mobile Bay in Alabama. I'd love to expedite my learning for using this forum. I'm on a financial forum (Bogleheads.org) and an RV forum (iRV2.com), and the forums are great yet can be overwhelming. As a start, where would I best post this photo and learn about our habitat. I took this photo on our city pier this morning. I think it's a Black-Crowned Night Heron, observed in broad daylight.Night Heron.png

Hi Yooper and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. You do have choices about where to post your picture. First off there's the Gallery where we'd love to see your images. You could also start a thread in, for instance "Your Birding Day": Your Birding Day especially if you have a lot of birds to talk about, or had a lovely exciting day.

Alternatively you could start a long-running thread in the Local Patch area: Michigan This is for recording what you see whenever you visit a Patch that you watch regularly.

Hoping these ideas help but please don't be afraid to ask if you're ever not sure how to find your way around; this is a large forum and can seem a bit confusing at first, but I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. Nice photo of this Black crowned night Heron. One way to learn about his habitat would be to click on the OPUS tab at the top of forum and then search for the bird there, all sorts of useful information about birds can be found in OPUS.

Hi again Yooper. I suggest you prepare your picture first, editing as you feel best. Then re-size it to something below 3000px on the longest side. Most people seem to upload between 1-2000px. (This is because the part of the software which produces thumbnails cannot handle large size files and just shows the basic landscape icon). The actual Gallery software can handle large images though.

When you have done that and saved a copy of the image to somewhere easy to find, click on the Gallery tab in the row above this thread. A new screen opens showing the latest images with a large button saying "Add Media".

Click on that and a new screen opens showing all the categories we have for images. Choose the most appropriate one and click on it. Another screen then appears with two buttons; the Upload File one is the one you want for pictures on your computer. This other one is for adding the likes of your videos which are hosted elsewhere (such as YouTube).

When you click on the button the screen then opens with some fields for adding information. How much you add is up to you, but it does help members to have the bird named, along with the scientific name. The date the picture was taken and where it was seen.

I hope this helps. (It may seem a bit long, but it is very quick when you get going).
