New nest (1 Viewer)

Hi. We live in Bergen County NJ. On our front door we have a metal wreath. A few days ago birds start building a nest between the back of the wreath and the door. There is a small crescent window in the door through which we can see into the nest. This morning I noticed a single small white egg in the nest. Obviously it’s too late to move the nest. (Last night we opened the door and one of the birds flew into the house. Fortunately we got it to fly out fairly quickly.)

I guess I have two questions:
1) We have a back door we can use. Should we just avoid using our front door for now so that we don’t disturb the nest or have the birds fly into our house again?

2)Can we move the nest after the first batch of eggs have hatched and the fledglings leave?

Not sure of the species but based on reading we think they are house finches.

Welcome to Birdforum.

It would be best if you avoid using the front door.

It would be best if you leave the nest until autumn in case they have a second brood. I don’t think house finches have white eggs.

Thanks for replying. It’s hard to see the egg so I’m not sure it’s white or a very light color.

Hi, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. Using the back door would make the birds feel more at ease. And, if you can wait until autumn to move the nest that would be optimal.

Hi NJFinches and a warm welcome from me too. There are two other finches which are often confused with House Finch; Purple and Cassin's. Here is a link to our Opus article for the House Finch and you will find links to both the other two on there for you to contrast and compare.

Agree with Lisa and please do try to ration any peeks through the window at the nest as much as possible. ;)

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I hope to hear about all the birds you see when out and about.
