New tripod and head for BTX 85 (1 Viewer)

I’m having to get a new tripod and head for my BTX, so would be grateful for any recommendations,
and what people are useing

Gitzo GT5533LS with a GHF2W head. Usually I put my BTX85 on a long rail (ca. 120 mm) or I use the balance rail.

I think you'll get more replies if you explain how and where you use the scope:

• Do you carry your scope+tripod on longer walks?
• Or do you usually just walk a few hundred meters from your car?
• Do you use it for seawatches in stormy weather, e.g. in October?
• Or do you use it maily inland?
• Are you "good weather birder" or do you go birding in all sorts of weather?

I live very close to an estuary so the walks tend to be fairly short, also when wandering around the Somerset
Wetlands the walks are a lot longer. I do use a Scope pack for my present tripod.
I do quite a bit of Autumn seawatching where yes I do get wet sometimes.

Well, that means you need a stable tripod that doesn't weigh too much. Wooden tripods won't really work for you. I'd look at carbon tripods with a good video head. The combination Ignatius suggested would work well, I think. Gitzos are excellent tripods that last a long time. An alternative head might be the Manfrotto 500 AH.

I recommend a BERLEBACH 553 head (2-Way-Head Mod. 553 from Berlebach ® Tripods). Since you got a BTX, the price tag (445 €) should not be a major concern, I suppose.

Thanks for all your help. I’ve decided to go down the Manfrotto route with the MH500 head
and carbon tripod, which hopefully I will not need to use a balance rail.
