out for a hike (1 Viewer)

Out for a hike and saw lots of fun things. The Western skink was sunning as the overcast broke up. The newt larvae were plentiful in a pond, along with chorus frog polliwogs, beetles and snails. Some had turned to tiny frogs. The garter snake was actively hunting (he has a frog in his mouth). I had snuck up on him when he wasn't looking. I was only a foot away as he hunted out the small frogs. A great hike!

Nice photos Nyatt. Used to keep a Garter Snake as a pet when I was younger. He was a friendly little guy, who never once tried to bite. Much prefer to see reptiles out in the wild now.

What a handsome little skink! There is a similar critter around my house in western Indiana.....they come out when it is really hot, and zip around.....even had some babies earlier this summer. The little ones had the blue tail.....the larger ones seem to be mostly tan.....but I think I have seen one very similar to yours a time or two. Neat critters!
