Phoney "undelivered mail" (1 Viewer)

Is there a way to tell when an email from: "Mail Delivery System" with the subject: "Undelivered Mail Return to Sender" is real and not spam? In the past I have opened such mail only to find the usual offers for sex related junk. Most of the time I eliminate them without opening but sometimes I would like to know is one of my emails really did'nt go through. Thanks.

Hi ehrodz,

Generally, it's spam, hard to tell until you read the full header information contained in the original (returned - lol, email). If the originating server is not from your ISP or mail server and you didn't send the original - it's definitely spam :)

(One of my own email accounts is on many spam lists because of 'friends' sending out CC'ed 'jokes' to groups, etc., quite funny to spamlist your own account :)).

It happens - until all your contacts cease sending out emails to groups using CC not BCC, it's gonna happen :(

Good luck,

Andy.

If its phoney undelivered mail then presumably you would have sent it, if its not one you sent don't open it.

I suddenly received about 200 of these in one go,about 2 weeks ago, wasn't sure what was going off.Luckily they gradually reduced and have now almost stopped.

Duke, The problem is that the email notices of undelivered mail that I refer to are not identifyable in the inbox of messages as an email that I sent. The inbox only shows the source of the notice as "Mail Delivery System" and the subject as "Undelivered Mail Return to Sender"

Are you saying that a notice of undelivered email that I sent will be identifyable in some way when listed in the inbox of messages? If so that would solve my problem. What identifyable information does the inbox contain when you get a notice of undelivered mail?

In my email I have visibility of the text field without opening it or fear of opening any attachements, its easy to spot which ones I may have sent (which is almost never) I also have the mail set up not to display images unless its from a known contact.

Is this not the answer to the original question then? :t:

Ehrodz, I use Yahoo mail too, if you switch to the 'new Yahoo', you can see full headers by clicking 'Compact Header' on the top right of each email and selecting 'Full Header'. You will then get a pop-out containing the full message details.

PS. Easier, in Classic Mail, there's a Full Headers link on the bottom right of each email :)

This is exactly what I needed to know. Thanks, Andy.
