Pileated Woodpecker (1 Viewer)

I finally managed to get this picture of a Pileated Woodpecker at eye level yesterday.

Unfortunately I was not able to approach closer than about 50M before a Red-bellied Woodpecker chased him away. It times like this that I get really jealous of my fellow bird and photo nuts that have really long lens like the Canon 600mm IS. Oh well maybe later this year.

I still think it's a great camera even without the big lens, almost 35 mm quality.
Nice shot of the Woodpecker :t:

Nice shot.. and crisp too.. could you not zoom in on your photoediting program? This looks like a marvelous shot... and what a great camera you have... so when are you buying the 600???
That is my next wish...that and a personal lesson session from Mr. Blake!!!

This image is already significantly cropped and would really fall apart if I cropped any further. I hope to start with the Canon 100-400 5.6 L IS first.

Well I think that is a really beautiful photograph and frankly the setting is wonderful. I love the crisp details of that capture and a Pileated is one of the most unique Woodpeckers anywhere.I want the 600 lens and have the 100-400 it is a beauty to be sure... though maybe a 75-300 might be a good all around lens for every day too.

Excellent picture! I know you've mentioned before that you were trying for this....Congratulations!!!! You have a gorgeous photo there!

What a most beautiful and special bird. It looks quite large, is it?
I was lucky once in a little wood in Holland, near the German border, to see a pair of black woodpeckers doing their courtship, round and round the trunk of a pine tree. They are large birds but not as spectacular as yours

I have a pair of pileateds in my neighborhood. They stand about 18 inches tall and have about a 2 foot wingspan. They are quite large and wonderful birds. It's really something to watch bang away at tree!

Very nice. I finally got to see a pair of these beautiful birds this past October and it was a thrill. The photo I had gotten was no way near as good as this one.

That is a good photo, Vogelman. You mean that scrawny little Red-bellied chased off that monstrous Pileated? Kind of like blackbirds on a hawk, I would imagine.

Thanks to all for the kind comments. Brian, the much smaller Red-bellied did indeed chase off the much larger Pileated. It was quite entertaining to see the Red-bellied buzzing and flapping his wings at a Pileated more than twice his size. I have now seen this on two separate occasions.
