Hello everyone,

I saw this cuckoo in Thailand (Saraburi (Provinz), Nong Mu, 12.2024.).
I think it is a female or young bird of Plaintive Cuckoo - Cacomantis merulinus or Cacomantis sonnerati.
Does anyone know the exact difference? I couldn't really find anything on the net.
I hope someone can help.

Best regards Gerald

I think you would have more luck with this type of question if it was asked in the Bird Identification forum part of Birdforum

Any more photos? Can you see if the outer tail feathers are barred (plaintive) or unbarred (should indicate Banded Bay). Any image showing more of the underside?

I cannot move the post but I can use the report function to ask it get moved.

It's there now Gerald!! I got distracted half way through moving it and must have forgotten to save the changes. Sorry!

I would love to get feedback from someone local. However, if I interpret the images correctly, this is in favor of plaintive — unless there is a third option I have overlooked.

Plaintive Cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus) was also my favorite also because of the habitat, only someone said it could also be the other one.
