was this caused by a pileated wp there were woodchips eveywere and it went up to 10 feet in the tree.

It's possible. The Pileated's range is certainly in your area in the winter months, though shows rare. so it would not be unreasonable.
 
In my New England experience, Pileateds do show less often than other woodpeckers, but I wouldn't say rarely.
