R7 and 100-500mm (1 Viewer)

Anyone using the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM Lens on an R7 for photographing flying birds? Thoughts? Is it quick enough to focus? I currently have the Sigma 150-600mm, it's not too bad, could be sharper, but it sometimes takes too long to lock on to birds in flight with this camera (wasn't too bad with 7Dii

Thanks!

Yes, have the R7 and 100-500mm but tend to use the 200-800mm much more as reach is important here.

The 100-500mm is a superb lens.

Thank you. I was thinking 1.4x on the 100-500...but I shall look at the 200-800
I've got the R7 and both the 100-500 and 200-800. They are both very good lenses, but I quickly found when trying to track an Iceland Gull at a nearby harbour that the 200-800 on the 1.6 crop body was just too much reach for flying birds at anything other than long range. It was like panning to follow the bird while looking through a drinking straw. On a full frame body the 200-800 is fine for BIF, but on the R7 it was just overkill. Similarly, I wouldn't pick the 1.4 converter with the R7 & 100-500, although I have used them together for that when taken by surprise as an osprey passed while I was photographing waders.

The R7 and 200-800 are good together otherwise.

The R7 and 100-500 are a great match, I used them together for over 2 years on birds in flight.

I also used the 7D2 with the Sigma 150-600 Sport from 2015 to 2020, but the bird detection on the mirrorless bodies meant that from late 2020, my trusty old 7D2 was put to pasture on the same shelf that it now occupies.

See this thread for images with the R7 & 100-500.
