Red kite spotted today in staffs (1 Viewer)

Maybe there the norm around here but i havent seen any yet,but this morning 10am i spotted a red kite really low about the hight of a telegraph pole,at first i thought there's another buzzard ahead, as there in plenty, but as i got closer i could see its shape and beautiful tail shape.
This was on the a34 towards cannock from stafford just through brocton, just wondered if these are being seen more around stafford or is this a bit of a one off?

Thanks G

Red Kites on the move?

Glad you have seen a red kite - certainly the tail is a good indicator.
It is definitely true that there is movement from one region to another now that the re-introduction programme is finished.

Two of our kites (1 and 2) defected long ago from the Gateshead core area and joined the Yorkshire kites where they are prolific breeders!

We have had three Cumbrian kites and one is still here. We've also got one from the Aberdeen kite group. This is good for the gene pool, isn't it! Interesting that you have seen a single kite; look out for more. Can you tell where it appears to be coming from?

Go to http://www.friendsofredkites.org.uk/page6.htm for more information.

Note: Northern Ireland now has a red kite population and a re-location has been carried out in the Aberdeen area.

Thankyou for your reply,i know the area well and i will keep my eye open for more now definately...beautiful bird..i pass the area everyday twice, and i only live five mins from there so i am going to go with the binoculars when off..thanks again..

Don't know the area, but I'd expect that its not unusual. As I understand it the Welsh population is starting to spread across the border now

I think they're just about everywhere now. Our Chiltern birds have certainly spread south- I've seen them as far south as Winchester- and I, too, have seen Kites in Cumbria recently.

...And just as I was typing the above a Kite flew low over the garden calling. It's doing it now. I love their spring call- it's like the sound effects from a spaghetti western!

They are the kites released in Grizedale forest. It's lovely to see them almost everywhere nowadays.

It isn't unusual to see kites most everywhere these days, I receive dozens and dozens of emails reporting sightings from all over the UK.

Without a definitive identifiable wing tag, it is impossible to say with certainty where they come from.

Two today near Lynford Lakes, Mundford, Norfolk at 1430; no wing tags seen.

Hi there seen them over Wombourne today big surprise but such a wonderful sight.

They are not that common in Staffs yet, I have seen around 8 birds in Staffs (near Wolverhampton) in my life, but they are definitely becoming less of a surprise here.
