Hi Hummer,
In 1999 the RSPB,Yorkshire Water and the Harewood Estate set up a release scheme for red kites based in the grounds of Harewood House. They used continental birds and released 20 birds every year for 4 years. The scheme has been a great success as the first wild bred bird was logged in the second year of the scheme, the number of birds now being over a hundred. Sadly there have been casualties, at least one bird has been poisoned, another bird's corpse was find in too poor a state to be able to ascertain cause of death.
In North Leeds where I live it isn't unusual to see birds over the fields and woods. A pair of birds set up territory in the Yorkshire Wolds and it is believed that one of the Yorkshire birds actually turned up in Wales a couple of years ago.
There are other release schemes underway in the hope that before long there will be nationwide coverage and a healthy self sustaining population.
