Redpoll - common vs lesser - UK (1 Viewer)

Saw a group of redpolls this morning in Oxfordshire, UK - a few photos and sound recording attached.
Confused on lesser vs common distinction (sound leading me one way, and visuals the other...)
Also are these distinguished at the species, subspecies, or variety level - have seen conflicting things written.

No comment on identification, but the current trend is towards lumping; as far as I know there are no reliable DNA differences, but not all the relevant authorities have yet followed suit.
