Sabine's gull (1 Viewer)

Dave Adshead

How much!
I was on the RSPB Skua cruise out of Bridlington today, saw Sooty Shearwater, Great Skua and a Sabine's gull.

The gull kept dropping into the chum trail with the other gulls.

I've attached three images of the gull, sorry but the qualities poor, but I thought they were worth showing. It was a good day all round, which started with a Red Throated Diver at the harbour.

The Bridlington Skua cruises sometimes get a bad press (and in fairness I've been on very quiet ones but that's the gamble) but this year they seem to have scored well with this Sab's, a L-t Skua the day before and Great Shearwater so far this year to name but a few. Good stuff.

your pix are a great reminder of what a top gull Sabine's is - not much chance in this part of the world, however!

also from the boat

Snow Goose and Black Tern on the 15th :)

i too was on the trip its the best so far what a privelege to see such a rare visitor to our shores i too took pictures which are identical to the above so i have not posted them good views of sooty sheer and bonxie and manx sheer the sea had quite a swell though which hampered photography going again on the 29 this month wont use the teleconverter this time on my nikon 300 2.8 vr.what lens were you using to take the sabs.

thanks.

I was lucky enough to be on the cruise on the 15th. It was excellent - all 4 skua species (long-tailed was a lifer for me), loads of sooty and manx shearwaters, and a single Balearic, plus lots more too ( Black tern, little gulls, RT Divers, puffins, hundreds of pink feet heading south and a Snow goose!). Just being surrounded by so many diving gannets was a fantastic experience on its own. The rspb staff on board are great. The cruises seem to have been very productive so far this year (sabines gull, great shearwater, LT Skua). Beats freezing to death on the side of a cliff for me...
off again on 29th. fingers crossed for more of the same

geat shots of the sabines gull by the way

I agree about the swell, the times I had birds 'perfectly' framed in the viewfinder, press the shutter, the boat rolls, lo and behold you get just a wing tip, lol.

The gull was taken with a Canon 1D Mk2 and a Canon 300 mm f2.8 lens. The image, I'm sure you've guessed is heavily cropped.

On mine I used a 100 - 400 canon L, but Chrys who takes up post at the back of the boat used a canon 300 L and was almost full frame for some of the Sabs
