Screech Owl in Box -- How often can I peek in? (1 Viewer)

I was checking nest boxes over the weekend & was surprised to find an eastern screech owl in one. Would love to show my husband & neighbors & various kids, but worry about disturbing the owl. Is there a "rule" as to how often one can peek into a box with an owl(s) in it -- like I check my bluebird houses once a day during nesting season. I probably wouldn't dare check a box with nesting adult owls -- I figure they'd be much more fierce protecting their home than bluebirds...

Personally I'd keep well away from the nest box and just watch from a distance. Have you thought about putting a miniture cctv in the box? Of course it's too late to do that now but you could always get one fitted just before next years breeding season.

Agree with Johnny. Once a box is occupied, you really don't want to risk disturbing the owl which could lead to abandonment of the nest (and possibly eggs).

If you have a scope, you could set it up at a safe distance and let folks look at the nestbox that way. :t:

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks so much for the advice -- it's about what I figured -- that owls might be far less happy with intrusions than bluebirds. And those are good ideas about a camera for later, and binoculars or such for spying on the box now. Thanks again!
