I was shocked to see a sparrowhawk try to get a sparrrow in my garden this morning. It is not often that we have any birds of prey in my garden in downtown crossgates in Leeds. I just thought that I would share this with you.

You would be quite surprised how often they do visit, you cannot be looking all day. I get a male, female & juvenile female visiting. I always know when they are around, the house sparrows (about 50 in my garden) disappear into hidding, a few are caught as are the starlings.

Rod.

I live in a council estate in sheffield, with a busy mall 2 minutes away, some fields and a wood next door, plus all the houses in my area, and i see a male Sparrowhawk occassionally, and the female nearly every day. She`s a dove specialist, as every time i see her she`s pursuing doves, i always find dove remains when i walk my pet, and two summers ago i flushed her during her attack and she flew off leaving a dove with a torn back and missing hundreds of feathers. The dove survived, although i felt guilty that the hawk would go to bed hungry that night, but i flushed her by accident. I think they are amazing birds, and love to see them, flying, or in my garden.

Just last week, when I was on my deck, I watched a flock of sparrows and finches take cover in my neighbor's Spruce (or maybe Pine) tree. They were closely pursued by a "Sharpy." It didn't follow them into the tree though, but banked right and took off toward the trees in a cemetary nearby. And earlier the week before I heard a racket in the woods behind my house. I could hear a Red Tail Hawk calling and various other bird calls. Then a juvenile RTH burst out of the woods followed by a mob of smaller birds chasing IT!!

Nature's ways are curious indeed!

We have a juvenile sprawk regularly visiting that hasn't quite worked things out yet. She dived at the feeder yesterday, sending a small squadron of LTT's flying (she actually hit one of them, which was sent sprawling to the ground but immediately flew away) and promptly crashed head first into the bushes on the other side of the garden. She picked herself up with a look of "I meant to do that - honest", preened for a minute and flew off. No doubt our garden birds will have problems once she's more adept...
