Cyprus
In my mates porch, pretty big, about twice the size of Araneus diadematus.

It looks to have quite a prominent tubercle on the left side of the abdomen. Looks like diadematus otherwise though. Can't your mate get a better picture showing the abdomen clearly?
 
It's an Araneus spider of which there are 3 species acknowledged as present on Cyprus, A. diadematus, A. marmoreus and A. grossus. The white markings across the dorsal abdomen suggest this is A. diadematus. The general size of the females in Europe is up to about 20mm but it is acknowledged that the Cyprus species is larger and build very large orb-webs that can span several metres (as quoted in An Introduction To The Wildlife Of Cyprus, Sparrow and John).

In terms of web, building Shane, this animal has set up in a corner, in a building, is this suggestive of A. diadematus?
