spotting scope maintenance........ (1 Viewer)

Was wondering about the long term maintenance of spotting scopes in general. Do they ever need refreshing and or disassembled and cleaned......preferably by the manufacturer. How long does the antifog nitrogen typically stay put etc. Im new to spotting scopes. I invested in a good one and I love the damn thing. Really want to have it like new for years to come.

I can't answer your question, but if it is a Swarovski spotter you could send it back once in a while to get checked and cleaned. Oh, I forgot you got a Kowa spotter. I

Keep it clean with prevention of soiling rather than excessive cleaning, and when necessary clean according to the maker's instructions or like you would a camera lens.

Don't let it get banged up. It is a sturdy piece of equipment, but high-magnification optics need such high tolerances to work perfectly that with bad luck even minor seeming knocks can compromise the image.

For the above reason, disassembly by inexpert hands is more likely to be harmful than helpful, and professional disassembly should is also better resorted to only if there is obviously visible internal condensation or dirt.

The mechanics and moving parts inside a scope are typically very durable and do not get abused in normal use, so their mileage should be very high indeed.

Fishing tackle, cars etc cherish good and regular maintenance, so you are well advised to direct your tlc to them instead.
