Spruce for ID (1 Viewer)

Jacamar

Well-known member
I found this tree near my home, but cannot find a match for it either in Peterson's Tree guide or on the internet. The cone is approximately 3 inches long, and the long extensions from under the scales have hard, sharp, curved tips. The needles are flat and about 1 inch long. I think it is a kind of spruce, but I cannot find any matches. Any ideas?

I would say Douglas Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii. There are 6 Asiactic species of Pseudotsuga but I have no idea how to ID them and very much doubt you have found one.

Thanks for the ID, BrightonBirder. The Douglas Fir is not in my field guide, so no wonder I couldn't identify it!

Since you are in Pennsylvania I would recommend two books to you Trees of Canada by J.L. Farrar, or Michigan Trees by Barnes and Wagner, two very good general texts. Farrar's book is also available as Trees of the Northern UNited States and Canada.
