Hi - any ideas for this this taken on December 1st at La Fortuna in Costa Rica? Merlin is not giving me anything (except Red-legged Honeycreeper - don't think it is!)

A moulting young male Red-legged Honeycreeper is correct. Note the bill and black coming in on the back/face. here's a similar bird ML612111194 - Red-legged Honeycreeper - Macaulay Library
