The Blob Invades Hilton Pond (1 Viewer)

Bryozoans aren't insects, of course, but I did find what I believe is a midge larva living in one. Your thoughts?

Many times on strolls around our Piedmont property we've been surprised by an unexpected encounter, and such was the case "This Week at Hilton Pond" when we discovered we had been invaded by "The Blob." No, not the fifties-era extraterrestrial that tried to eat Pennsylvania, but several colonies of seldom-seen little aquatic creatures called bryozoans. To read all about these ancient organisms and their modern-day activities, please visit our photo essay for 11-21 May 2012 at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek120511.html

While there don't forget to scroll down for our usual tally of birds banded and recaptured during the period--there were several of real interest--plus some miscellaneous nature notes and a word of thanks to folks who help support the Center's education, research, and conservation efforts.

Happy Nature Watching!

BILL
