Unsustainable Turtle Dove and Common Quail shooting holidays in Spain (1 Viewer)

Hi Birforum-ers

This really has me rather angry !

I am particularly concerned about the promotion of both Common Quail and Turtle Dove shoot holidays which run completely contrary to these aspects they state on their website:

"We believe that hunting is a crucial tool for the conservation of wildlife. It is an integral, essential and legitimate component of nature conservation projects”

They also go on to state the following:

"BookYourHunt supports the concept of income generation through science-based conservation and sustainable use of wildlife. This empowers local communities, as they gain the ability to manage their wildlife resources, which benefits not only the economy and people, but most importantly the conservation of nature. This is made possible by focusing on hunting opportunities that are sustainable and strictly legal, and that benefit both local peoples and wildlife conservation”

Let us first look at the current population of Turtle Doves in Europe a long range migratory species that has declined by such a rate that it will be extirpated from some European countries as a breeding bird. The population decline has been so catastrophic that there is a desperate need for a cessation of hunting and further reviews of the European Turtle Dove action plan - some countries in Europe have even taken steps to cease hunting, including some of the Spanish autonomous regions seeing fit to outlaw the hunting of this species - the rest of Spain has not yet followed suit.

The conservation of the Common Quail - sadly not so common now and also a migratory species has also suffered a similar fate - the practice of hunting this species has undoubtedly been one of the major reasons for decline and further complicated by the release of Japanese Quail for hunting which has led to hybridisation further complicating the species future.

The EU sight these two issues (of hunting and hybridatsion due to releases for hunting) as major issues for the species - Please see the Common Quail action plan here: https://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/conservation/wildbirds/hunting/docs/Quail EU_ MP.pdf

So bold claims by this company BookYourHunt of sustainable and providing support for the sustainability of nature are both majorly erroneous and extremely immoral.

....maybe you'll join me in writing an email them to them?
