Whimbrel i think (1 Viewer)

Hello,

any more pictures? I dont have confident points against a Whimbrel here, but my first gut feeling was 1 cy Curlew:

  • many Whimbrels have stronger barring on the axillaries
  • the bill looks slender, quite a few Whimbrels have a thicker one, adding to the Gonzo-Impression imo. And isnt the tip to fine?
  • I miss the pale median-crown-stripe of many Whimbrels. Yes, some Whimbrels lack them, at least unser field conditions
  • Some Whimbrels have still a more contrasting head-pattern with a whiter supercilium and a blacker loral stripe
  • isnt the pale yellowish leg colouration better for Curlew???
So I hope that all have a second deeper look. Thanks!

Or are we looking at a fine pale oversharpened edge to the front of the crown (as present also on the top and rear of the crown) with a bit of dark muck on the background behind? - giving the impression of a very narrow hint of a pale median crown-stripe 🤷🏻 Tricky.

Hello,

thanks for the new pictures. They look better for Whimbrel imo:
  • pure white, no buff ground colour to the rear supercilium like it seems in the first picture.
  • the fine tip is the result of mud
  • is the heavy barring in the supercilium within variation for a Whimbrel? yes, but just ...
  • still one of the rare Whimbrels without a median crown-stripe imo. In the front I only see ruffled feathers and a white artefact-hallow running down the neck (nö offense you know)
  • what is with the barring of the outer primaries?

Yes, that definitely looks like a whimbrel. The curved bill and dark stripes on the head are key features. Also, notice the light belly and long legs, which help with identification. Love these birds, their migrations are just amazing! If you have more photos, please share them! It’s always great to see different angles.
