Xanthochromic Rainbow Lorikeet? NSW Australia (1 Viewer)

Hi

I don’t know much about birds. But in my backyard this morning I saw this striking bird, and just had enough time to capture the photo with my phone, hence the low image quality.

After googling I came to the conclusion that it is a xanthochromic rainbow lorikeet and would very much appreciate confirmation, and any indication of its rarity or otherwise.

Location south coast of NSW near Batemans Bay

Hi Upolu and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. Was he on his own, or with a flock of Rainbows? It's just I'm wondering if this is an escaped pet? However, I'm sure some of our more expert members will be along shortly.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thanks for your welcome and interest.

It was on its own. We have dozens of rainbow lorikeets in our backyard everyday, usually in clusters but sometimes alone. It didn’t occur to me that this might be an escaped pet rather than a wild mutation.

If it were a wild mutation I wonder whether it would be ostracised because of its colouration. I suppose that if there are known captive bred varieties that look like this one then it’s likely to be an escapee.

Thanks for your insight and best regards
Upolu
