Dirk Samuel Hoedt (1813–1893) was a Dutch civil servant, being Secretary for the Moluccas (1854–1855), where he also collected (1853–1867).

Dirk Samuel Hoedt (1815-1893) Dutch civil servant, collector, plantation owner in the East Indies 1853-1893 (subsp. Ninox theomacha, Pampusana, subsp. Rhipidura rufiventris).

HOEDT, Dirk Samuel - 6 July 1815 Amboina - 1 Jan. 1893 Amboina. Had several important government functions on Amboina, e.g. 1853 Secretary of the government of the Moluccan Islands, 1854 President of the Court of Justice at Ambon. 1862 appointed collector of the RMNH. 1863 a large collection of naturalia from Ambon and the surrounding islands to the RMNH, later also from the Kei-islands. 1862 and 1870 shells to the Zool. Mus. Amsterdam. Gave his collec-tions to G.J.O. van der Hucht (q.v.) at Batavia

But Dirk Samuel Hoedt (1816-1893) » Stamboom van Hutten » Genealogie Online tells us born 1816
Hij is geboren in het jaar 1816.

So I would tend 1815 (as there is a detailed date) but have no final evidence. I think 1813 is completly wrong.

The conchology.be account comes from here. Hendrik Engel's scholarly account gives several primary sources and makes me confident of its accuracy. Attached is his record of service which gives his date of birth (6 July 1815) and retirement.

Note however that there are more bird, crab, plant and even parasite records for a "D.J. Hoedt" in Indonesia, and even in New Guinea as late as the 1910's.

It would appear that there was a Dutch Government employee for a short time - D.J. Hoedt on Amboina in 1856. I wonder if this is a case of father and son (see attached)??
