Identification

Greyish-brown to blackish-brown above finely spotted with white. Whitish to pale buff below, heavily barred with black. Head has black crest, long and thin and curving forwards, and dusky stripe behind eye bordered above and below by white stripes.

Length 39cm.

Distribution

North-west, central and southern Argentina and southern Chile. Resident.

Taxonomy

Races intermedia, magnistriata and riojana all occur in parts of northwest Argentina, albida in western Argentina, elegans in central and multiguttata in east-central Argentina, devia in southwest Argentina and patagonica in southern parts of Chile and Argentina.

Habitat

Scrub and open woodland.

Behaviour

The diet includes seeds, leaves, fruits and insects.

Both sexes form a hollow in the ground which serves as the nest. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the young.
