Identification

A medium-sized wader, which is slightly larger and longer-legged than the Eurasian Woodcock.

Confusion Species

Can be told from the Eurasian Woodcock by the overall browner coloration and the pinkish bare skin behind the eye, as well as the choice of habitat.

Distribution

Endemic to Japan, found on few southern Japanese islands: Amami-O-Shima Island, Tokuno-Shima Island, Okinawa Island, and Tokashiki-Shima Island
