Identification
16·5 cm (6½ in)
- Grey head
- Browner on crown and nape
- Blackish lores
Distribution
South America: found in arid Andes of Peru (Ancash to southern Lima)
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
The former subspecies personata is now widely accepted as full species, Rufous-backed Inca Finch.
Habitat
Western Andean slopes of dry grassland/shrubland in the Puna Life Zone. Observed at heights around 3500 m.
Behaviour
They are mostly seen alone or in pairs. When on the ground their tails are inclined to be cocked.
Diet
Ground feeders. Their diet consists mostly of cactus fruits.
