Trogon cupreicauda

Identification

23–25 cm (9-9¾ in)
Male

  • Head, and mantle coppery green
    • Throat and face black
  • Rump bluish green
  • Uppertail green to greenish-copper, with broad black terminal band; 50% of males have a green subterminal band
  • Breast blue-green to golden-green
  • Belly yellow
    • White band separating yellow belly from breast is incomplete in most, with some showing presence or complete absence
  • Undertail barred black and white, 4-5 bars per cm
  • Wing coverts black and white with about 9-10 bars per cm
  • Bill yellow
  • Eye-ring yellow to yellow-green

Female

  • Head, upper breast and back brown with reddish to yellowish tones
  • Uppertail Rufous-brown
  • Yellow belly
  • Undertail barred black and white with 3-5 bars per cm; black bars narrower than white
    • Undertail infused with brown
  • Bill mostly yellow
  • Pale eye-ring wider behind and in front of the eye

Tropical western Colombia and western Ecuador
