Identification
13.5 - 14 cm. A medium-sized finch.
- Black head
- Large conical bill brown to brownish-pink
- Yellow throat and yellow collar
- Black wings with yellow wing-flash
- Blackish-olive upperparts, deep olive rump and uppertail-coverts with variable amount of bright yellow
- Black notched tail, outer feathers edged bright yellow
- Bright yellow underparts with blackish-olive or olive markings on breast and flanks
Females are similar to males but duller and with less yellow in wing.
Juveniles are similar to females but they have a duller brownish-olive head, more heavily streaked upperparts and paler underparts mottled with dull olive on side of breast.
Distribution
Endemic to the Da Lat Plateau in south Annam, south-central Vietnam.
A locally common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Like all other species of this genus it has been included in the genus Carduelis.
Habitat
Found in open pine woodland (mostly Khasi pine). Also in secondary growth, in gardens and at edges of cultivation.
Occurs at 1200 to 19000m, sometimes lower.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds mostly on seeds of Khasi pine, takes also some insects.
Forages in pairs or small groups in trees and bushes, rarely on the ground.
Breeding
Breeding season from December to May. The nest is a neat cup placed on a pine branch. No other information.
Movements
A sedentary species.
