Identification
18–20 in (45–52 cm); 2–3 lb (1–1.5 kg).
Adults
Dark plumage and contrasting white wing tips, forming a light patch on the back. Long neck and legs. Lower throat purple, outerwing coverts purple, bronze and green.
Juveniles
Reddish with cream underparts and white stripes.

This species is allopatric with the Gray-winged Trumpeter, P. crepitans.
This is a monotypic species.
The subspecies ochroptera of Gray-winged Trumpeter was formerly included in this species.
Habitat
Mature dense tropical forest.
Behaviour
Diet includes fruit, some invertebrates and vertebates.
Is found in groups of 3 -12.
Nests are built in tree cavities and 3 eggs are laid; incubation lasts 23-29 days. Dominant female mates with 3 dominant males; other adults help to feed and care for chicks.
