Identification

17 cm (6¾ in)
Male

  • Golden-yellow forehead and throat
  • Red crown to hindneck
  • Bluish-black lores
  • Yellow throat

Female has an all black crown

Distribution

South America: found from eastern and south-eastern Brazil to eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Humid forests; cane fields, orchards and palm groves.

Behaviour

Diet

Omnivorous, their diet consists of fruit, berries, seeds, insects and larvae.
