Tachyphonus cristatus
Identification
15 cm (6 in)
The male is mostly black with a broad, flat yellow and orange crest. You can usually see some white at the shoulder and this shows as white under-wings in flight. The rump is buff as is the throat.
Distribution
South America found from Colombia, Venezuela and The Guianas to Peru and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Nine subspecies are recognized[1]:
- L. c. fallax: Southern Colombia (south-eastern Nariño) to eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru
- L. c. cristatellus: Tropical south-eastern Colombia to north-eastern Peru, southern Venezuela and north-western Brazil
- L. c. huarandosae: Northern Peru (Chinchipe Valley in Río Marañón Valley)
- L. c. intercedens: Eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), Guyana and Suriname
- L. c. cristatus: French Guiana and north-eastern Brazil (north of the Amazon)
- L. c. pallidigula: North-eastern Brazil (eastern Pará and lower Rio Tocantins)
- L. c. madeirae: Brazil south of the Amazon (Teffe to Rio Xingú and Mato Grosso)
- L. c. nattereri: South-western Brazil (Mato Grosso)
- L. c. brunneus: Eastern Brazil (Pernambuco to São Paulo)
Habitat
Forests and forest borders and clearings, gardens and cocoa farms.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mainly of arthropods and fruit.
Breeding
A nest was described as being an open cup in a bush or small palm.
