Lake "Guelper See" is called "petrol station of migration birds". It said it is possible to see until 200.000 wild gooses in October.
In spring are lots of flooded meadow near river Elbe and Havel. So it is possible to see lots of waders, geese and ducks there. Also cranes very common there. It is also good place for White-tailed Eagle, Osprey and from autumn to spring Rough-legged Buzzard. In spring comes Honey Buzzard.
This place can be combined with others good birding spots. e.g. river floodplains Elbtalauen on river Elbe is just 20 km in northwest Bustard area Buckow is just 30 km in southeast floodplains Dosseniederung on river Dosse is only few km in the north

From Rathenow is 6 km to north village Hohenauen. 7 km to west is empty street to Parey. There You can small channels, very wet meadows, forest. Follow to north after 6 km You will reach Guelpen. 3,5 km before is a watching tower in a wetland. In south of the lake is open meadow on the lake. If You come near slowly, You will see Gooses. In the north east is reed ( see picture ). Lots of gooses flight over You from the reed. Lanius collurio is heard very often, Cuckoo sometimes.
If You have more time You can follow to north west to town Havelberg on river Havel and to Ruehstedt nearby Wittenberge. Ruehstedt had 32 Storcks last year and get 69 young Storcks. Content and images originally posted by albatross02
