Identification

Black-tipped red bill, rufous rump and underparts.
Female has an all black bill

Distribution

Western South America: found in Peru and Ecuador.

This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 6 subspecies.

  • A. a. dumerilii

Pacific slope of Ecuador to northern Peru; east slope in Zamora Valley

  • A. a. azuay

Southwestern Ecuador (Río Jubones drainage in Azuay and northern Loja)

  • A. a. alticola

Andes of southern Ecuador

  • A. a. leucophoea

Northwestern Peru

  • A. a. amazilia

Arid littoral of western Peru

  • A. a. caeruleigularis

Foothills of southwestern Peru (Nazca Valley in Ica)
