Identification

28–29 cm a large woodcreeper

  • Large head
  • Short large bill
  • Short tail

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • H. s. insignis:
  • Western Amazonian Brazil (Rio Uaupés region)
  • H. s. stresemanni:
  • North-western Brazil (lower Rio Negro to Rio Solimões)
  • H. s.undulatus:
  • Tropical south-eastern Peru to extreme north-western Bolivia and western Brazil

Habitat

Humid Amazonian lowland forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Little has been published. The diet probably includes ants. It is thought their foraging behaviour would be similar to Red-billed Woodcreeper
