Dicaeum monticolum

Identification

8 cm (3¼ in)
Male

  • Black face
  • Shiny bluis-back crown and upperparts
  • Sooty-black malar and sides of neck
  • White chin
  • Scarlet throat and breast

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indochina, Malaysia, Island of Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Montane rainforests, heath forests and dipterocarp forests. Also more scrubby areas at heights around 460–2540 m.

Behaviour

A tiny active bird, mainly found among the canopy of trees

Diet

The diet includes berries, particularly the fruits of the Melastoma plants along the forest edges.
